mental health and wellbeing

We recognise that addressing racism and discrimination requires not only structural change but also support for those experiencing their impacts. Our culturally responsive wellbeing services create safe spaces where racially minoritised individuals can process experiences, build resilience, and transform individual healing into collective action for systems change. Through our evidence-based approach, we offer tailored mental health and wellbeing solutions that centre the experiences of Black African, Caribbean, and other racially minoritised communities – creating pathways to healing often missing in mainstream services.

Emotional Support Groups

Our flagship Emotional Support Groups (ESGs) provide culturally-responsive mental health support designed specifically for Black African and Caribbean communities facing mild to moderate mental health challenges. Developed in 2018 through our Mental Health Insights research, these groups address a critical gap in conventional mental health services.

Our 8 or 12-week Emotional Support Group program creates safe, culturally-specific spaces where participants can:
Process experiences of racism and discrimination

Develop practical coping strategies for anxiety, relationship challenges, and workplace issues

Build self-esteem and confidence through peer support

Connect with networks of Black community organisations

Access trauma-informed emotional support from facilitators who "look like me"
For healthcare commissioners, local authorities, and funders, our ESGs represent a high-impact investment in community wellbeing that addresses gaps in traditional mental health provision while creating culturally-safe spaces for healing.

EMPOWER

Our EMPOWER (Emotional and Mental Wellbeing Practices in Workplace Encounters of Racism) workshops address the critical need for mental health support for racially minoritised staff experiencing discrimination in professional environments.

Unlike traditional diversity training that focuses on building awareness in others, our EMPOWER workshops specifically support those experiencing racial discrimination. Traditional D&I initiatives often neglect to provide emotional support to Black and other minoritised staff who can be deeply affected by even well-intentioned colleagues during discussions about racism and discrimination. Many report experiencing gaslighting and finding themselves unable to respond in the moment, fearing potential repercussions if they speak up, Our EMPOWER workshops specifically support those experiencing racial discrimination, providing 3-hour facilitated safe spaces for Black, Asian, and other racially minoritised staff:

Practical techniques for maintaining emotional resilience when facing discrimination

Tools to understand and navigate internalised oppression

Strategies to transform incidents into teachable moments without compromising personal wellbeing

Language and frameworks for advocating for systemic change

Confidential spaces for authentic sharing and processing

You really feel supported and it’s also nice to give your support to others. We  feel like we’re part of a community, we all care about each other, and it just feels so so real. I feel like in this space we can really truly talk about anything.

Thank you to Hillna who has been amazing in terms of running this group, supporting us all, giving us space, giving us time, thinking outside of the box and trying to make it creative.

When I first joined, I was lacking a lot of confidence, I was quite withdrawn… I felt really into  myself. I was actually just reflecting yesterday… wow I’ve actually come so far.  I’ve seen a shift within myself and I know it has to do with this group.
