Community-powered knowledge generation

We believe that transformative change happens when lived experience guides institutional practice through equitable partnerships. Our approach challenges traditional power dynamics by positioning communities as co-creators rather than subjects, creating research and knowledge that leads to meaningful systems change.

As trained social and behavioural scientists, we bring methodological rigour to our community-centred approach, creating insights that meet the highest academic standards while honouring the wisdom that comes from lived experience. This unique combination produces knowledge that is both scientifically valid and culturally authentic – essential for creating lasting change.

Community Listening, Co-design & EVALUATION

We design and facilitate culturally responsive listening exercises that capture the authentic voices of racially minoritised and marginalised communities. Our approach creates safe, brave spaces for honest dialogue about sensitive topics, revealing insights that traditional research methods often miss.

We identify patterns and interconnections across multiple community listening projects, providing a comprehensive understanding of community experiences that cuts across traditional sector boundaries.

We develop community-defined health outcome measures and evaluation tools that centre the perspectives and experiences of marginalised communities. These tools ensure that the impact of health interventions and research partnerships is measured in ways that are meaningful to the communities they serve.

Equitable Research Partnerships

We transform how research is conceived, designed, and implemented through our Community Research Collaborative model. This innovative approach addresses the foundational issues of power imbalances, institutional inertia, and historical exclusion that have led to widespread mistrust and disengagement from research among marginalised communities.
Our collaborative model works across multiple levels of the research ecosystem:

Health System Capacity Building: We develop institutional culture and behaviours for equity, fostering cultural humility and anti-racism within research organisations. This includes policy development for equitable research practices and creating frameworks for meaningful community engagement.

Community Capacity Building: We build capacity for community-powered research through our Mabadiliko Academy training programs and toolkits, empowering communities to move from passive research subjects to active collaborators while equipping both communities and institutions with the skills, confidence, and frameworks needed for equitable research partnerships.

Partnership Level: We establish structured collaborative spaces where communities and researchers work together as equals, with appropriate compensation for community expertise and clear pathways for influence on decision-making.

Through our 'networks of networks' model within the Voluntary and Community Sector Organisations (VCSOs), we build trust with and access multiple communities, including Black African and Caribbean, South Asian, Latin American, and LGBTQIA+ communities.
